All of Humphreys’ musical projects have shared some common elements: His distinctive soulful rasp, channeling Sam Cooke; his tight, imaginative guitar work; and his gift for writing melodic, catchy, deceptively simple tunes. — Eddie Huffman, Winston-Salem Journal

Greg Humphreys cut his teeth on the southeastern college circuit as frontman and songwriter for college rock band Dillon Fence with schoolmates Chris Goode, Kent Alphin and Scott Carle. The success of their 1989 debut EP helped make Dillon Fence a top draw in the Southeast and led to a record deal with Mammoth / Atlantic Records and three LPs – Rosemary, Outside In, and Living Room Scene.

Dillon Fence performed over a thousand shows throughout the United States, Canada and Europe in the '90s, with tours supporting X, The Black Crowes, and Hootie and the Blowfish.

In the mid ‘90s, Humphreys took a left turn and formed funk n' soul band Hobex with bassist Andy Ware and drummer Steve Hill. Hobex released their debut The Payback EP in 1996. Two releases on Humphreys' Phrex Records imprint led to the Humphreys/Jim Smith-penned song “Windows” being featured in the hit movie “Rounders” and a 1999 national re-release of their LP Back In the '90s on Slash / London Records.

Hobex followed up with U Ready Man on Tone-Cool / Artemis Records in 2002. Humphreys chalked up over a thousand shows with Hobex, including frequent appearances on the music festival circuit of the '00s.

Humphreys took a well-deserved touring break from 2008 to 2013, releasing four mostly acoustic LPs of stripped-down solo pieces, genre experiments and collaborations with fave musicians including Gibb Droll, Phil Cook, and Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz of Watchhouse.

Humphreys began performing as Greg Humphreys Electric Trio with bassist Matt Brandau and drummer Keith Robinson in 2014, following a move to NYC from his native North Carolina.

The trio appeared at Lockn' Music Festival in 2019 and their song “Blood From a Stone” was featured in the hit Netflix series Outer Banks in 2021. Humphreys’ two LPs with the trio, Lucky Guy and Haymaker, have over 600,000 streams on Spotify.

Humphreys released a solo LP in 2021 called Spanish Steps, a pandemic-era collection of songs featuring home recordings that explore fresh genres and production approaches, along with lyrical meditations on dreams, marriage and parenthood in New York City.

Recent home recording and songwriting sessions have resulted in a new single, "Take a Trip (Catch a Plane)" – the first of a singles series planned for 2023.

Humphreys has co-written songs with legendary Stax Records soul singer William Bell. Two of their songs appear on Bell's 2023 album, One Step Closer to Home. Another Bell and Humphreys co-write performed by Mr. Bell appears on Amazon Music's Produced By Matt Ross Spang series, which also features Al Green, Margo Price and John Prine.
